Este libro tiene como propósito compartir con los docentes una propuesta de estrategias de enseñanza de la lectura y escritura que constituyen un marco muy potente para que los estudiantes inicien sus aprendizajes de comprensión lectora y de producción de textos desde el nivel de transición mayor a primer ciclo de enseñanza básica. Está estructurado en nueve capítulos y un apéndice donde se desarrollan los temas más relevantes del Pro- grama CELL. El primer capítulo está orientado al desarrollo profesional docente, el segundo a profundizar sobre el proceso de lectoescritura y en los capítulos siguientes se describen las diferentes estrategias de enseñanza de la lectura y escritura que propone este programa, tales como: lectura en voz alta, lectura compartida, lectura guiada,
lectura independiente, escritura interactiva y escritura independiente. Por último, el apéndice contiene una diversidad de instrumentos de evaluación de la lectura y escritura, con los objetivos y orientaciones para su aplicación, los que permiten al profesor observar y ver los avances de aprendizaje de cada niño en los diferentes niveles y cursos a lo largo del año.
El doctor Stanley Swartz tiene una basta experiencia en educación, especialmente en el área de aprendizaje inicial de la lectura y escritura. Su trayectoria lo vincula con centros de enseñanza de las mas protegidas universidades de Estados Unidos y América Latina y es autor de decenas de libros que tienen como centro el desarrollo de las capacidades lectora y comprensivas de los niños.
